Environmental Assessment

Environmental assessment is a procedure that ensures that the environmental implications of decisions are taken into account before the decisions are made.

Environmental assessment can take many forms. It can be a two paragraph statement to say that a new garage will not be too close to someone's boundary, and that it will not block their light. On a much larger scale, it may start with sampling to record baseline (existing) conditions, and then compare the environmental impacts of a proposal with these conditions and offer solutions to minimise the impacts. It may even be a study to investigate whether a project should go ahead.

In New Zealand, an environmental assessment of some kind is always required when applying for any resource consent.
